Hickory Think's Pink!

In a little more than four weeks, High Point NC will come alive for Market Week, April 2-7!
Market makes me think of some of my favorite North Carolina creations like the Hickory Chair!
Hickory Chair began in Hickory, North Carolina in 1911! Celebrating 100 years! I appreciate the Hickory Chair Loving Hands Video,  it is representative of the hard work and talent North Carolinians have shown in the furniture Industry.
What a fun combination by Suzanne Kasler for Hickory Chair, the Linwood Side Chair  is featured in the March issue of House Beautiful.

Read more in the Made by Hickory Chair Blog!
As well as view the House Beautiful video by editor, Newell Taylor to inspire you to think PINK!!
Such a fun spin off from one of my favorite classic movies, the original Paramount Pictures, 1957 "Funny Face", starring Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire!
Not only do I love furniture, but I love pink! ! I am happy to share pink, I love!  When my husband and I moved into our house it became a joke, the more he talked about a "man cave" the more pink appeared!

The Buddy Pelletier Surfing Foundation

"In 1995, the Buddy Pelletier Surfing Scholarship Foundation was started in memory of Buddy Pelletier. He was a former top ranked shortboarder with the APS in the 1980's. Going back to his Longboard roots shortly before his death he came full circle in his passion for a sport called surfing."
"The Buddy Pelletier Surfing Foundation Mission is to operate for charitable, educational and humanitarian purposes. It will operate for these purposes as well as to engage in fund-raising endeavors and to also receive contributions in support of the Buddy Pelletier Surfing Foundation. This Foundation has been established to support the Educational and Humanitarian needs of the East Coast surfing community and it’s youth."

Tonight you can support BPSF by attending The Summertime Blues Art Auction.  This event is held annually the last weekend in February. Hosted by Watermark.  Art, memorabilia and jewelry.  Food and live music by Free Poor!  All proceeds benefit the Buddy Pelletier Surfing Foundation.

There are numerous ways to support the Buddy Pelletier Surfing Foundation throughout the year.  My husband has participated in the The Buddy Pellitier Longboard Classic since the beginning.
"The Buddy Pelletier Memorial Longboard Classic was started to honor the memory of east coast legend and much beloved surfer Buddy Pelletier. Emulating Buddy’s rare combination of sportsmanship and fierce competition surfers gather to let their surfing do their talking."

The Buddy Pelletier Surfing Foundation conducts a Surf Clinic each year with over 40 volunteers to teach surf etiquette and water safety. It is a wonderful event!

The costs of the Specialized Plates are $20.00 (in addition to the cost of registration) with $10.00 of monies received going directly to the BPSF."For more information concerning the BPSF NC DMV License Plate Program please call 919.861.3575

Our Famous Cafe on the Coast!

Today is the perfect day for me to talk about the famous New York Deli Cafe on the Atlantic Beach Causeway where Jerry  knows your name!  If you have never heard of the New York Deli Cafe then you have spent very little time here or as they say down east you are from "Off" which means, not from around here, an "old" local saying!  I went into the New York Deli Cafe today to get their homemade clam chowder and chicken soup for my husband, the patient.  I know, I know I should be cooking, but why cook when the New York Deli Cafe is on the island and I get to see my friends!
Our friends, the owners,  Ann and Jerry Maiolo are such a huge part of the community and make everyone feel at home as soon as you walk through the door! The New York Deli is in it's 27th year!  You will be inspired by their food and by the Food Network playing on their TV! I love all the wolfpack memorabilia in the Deli! Jerry, Ann and I share a love for NC State!
The Deli has been an all time favorite for many years!  I can guarantee you will not order anything off the board that you will not LOVE!  The specials are always incredible!  Ann bakes wonderful pies and do not leave without a t-shirt and a quart of their famous shrimp salad to take home! You will also need a copy of the New York Deli News for take out orders in the future! You will be back and you will thank me!
Everything is fresh! The Deli is also a favorite breakfast spot for us.  My husband loves their pancakes.  For lunch our usual order is an Empire State and a Chelsea.  Even their burger is awesome and you can get it Carolina Style with chili and slaw!
Do not miss Pasta night every Friday night starting at 5pm!  Italian at its finest!

It all Started in 1710, Everything Old is now New Again!

New Bern is such a great town! With 300 years of History and Southern Secrets to share, I cannot fit everything I love about the "Bern", Carolina Style in one day so the rest will have to wait!   Some of my favorite stops are not secrets but they are too fabulous not share with you right away just in case you have not heard!
The Chelsea is a wonderful place for lunch or dinner! The asparagus tower is a fave as well as the Salmon Salad.  My friends loved their shrimp and grits! Below is an original photo of the restaurant that was one of two pharmacies owned by the inventor of Pepsi-Cola, Caleb Bradham built in 1912.

We shopped off our lunch walking downtown New Bern. Two of my favorite shops are Confluence and Peacock's Plume! You will always be met with a smiling face at Confluence!

Peacock's Plume is the perfect stop for your party dress!  I was there the week before the Heart Ball so there was lots of Gala attire!

I could not leave downtown without stopping at Baker's Square to pick up Cinnamon rolls for my husband.  I am being extra nice since he has surgery on Thursday.  The last stop before leaving town should always be The Village Butcher and Market to pick up dinner so no one will have to cook after a long day of shopping in New Bern!  The other reason the cinnamon rolls are a good idea to keep the husband happy!

I hope when you visit New Bern you will enjoy yourself as much as we do!

Southern part of Heaven!

I first fell in love with the town of Chapel Hill during my residential real estate decade for it's charm and then fell deeper when my beloved UNC Doctors saved my life!
I love the shopping, the dining and A Southern Seasons is always a good idea!
Another incredible choice is just down the road at
The Fearrington House!
Chapel Hill is one of my favorite towns despite the fact I bleed Wolfpack red as hard as it is these days!  Saturday, I went where I have never been before, The Dean Dome.  I am sure my friends reading this do not believe it! Luckily, I did not have a dog in the fight as they were playing Boston College.  We had a great time with wonderful friends!
(Proof I was there!)

Remembering #3

North Carolina is the birthplace of Dale Earnhardt and the roots of stock car racing. Yesterday was a big day for race fans. February 20th, 2011 marks the 10th Anniversary of  Dale Earnhardt's death during the last lap of The Daytona 500.  It was an opportunity that over 150,000 people took to honor one of North Carolina's greatest legends.  The fans were silent while holding up three fingers during the 3rd lap of the race!

You can also pay tribute to "The Intimidater"  as well as all the others at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte NC.  North Carolina is home to many of NASCAR's finest in history, including  Richard Petty and Dale Jarrett.

Down by the River!

Unless you grew up in smalltown Eastern NC, it is not likely you aquired a taste for the "fishy" fish, Herring on the banks of the Roanoke River! You might not have ever heard of the Cypress Grill built in 1936!   But, The Cypress Grill is actually famous and is one of the last fish shacks!
You will see "YES, WE'RE OPEN" if you go between January and Easter Monday!

The Herring do not run the Roanoke like they did in the glory days, now the fish served also come from the Albemarle sound and Chowan river.  Go for the experiance and if herring is not your thing, order shimp, catfish or oysters. They also serve Rock Stew made with stripped river bass!  No Alcohol served!

I promise you will not be disappointed even if you order only the Chocolate pie or one of the other homemade pies, coconut or lemon!
It is worth a trip down by the river,
Carolina Style!

The end of the season is celebrated in Jamesville with the NC Herring Festival April 22-24th!

Carolina Lake Living!

While thinking about living outdoors in the Carolina's, I think of one of my very favorite places.  I grew up on Lake Gaston and still love every sunset I am blessed to see there today!  I have great memories with family and friends. As a child I met one of my best friends on the lake!  Along with another best friend, the three of us became the Lake Gaston Mermaids, unofficially of course!
 "Gaston Treasure"
The sunsets at the Lake are truly incredible.  I hope you will visit and see for yourself!  I love all artwork by William Ward Moseley especially his Lake Gaston collection. As an artist, he does a phenomenal job recreating the breathtaking views and has captured some of my favorite spots like Wobble Island and Goat Island!
"Wobble Island"
 "Goat Island II"
Lake Gaston was built in 1953.  It is 350 miles of beautiful shoreline.  We never get bored exploring! My Dad remembers years of skiing with friends on the lake before any development occurred.  The lake did not become a popular retirement destination along with growth of 2nd homes until the 70's.
"Sunset at Eaton Ferry"
 "Across the Cove II"
Lake living is a part of my past that taught me to enjoy the little things!! We had a favorite cove with a rope swing and it was the most fun!   I even remember my first time water skiing, fishing for catfish at night and swimming until my Mom made us get out of the water!
My brother and I always had a house full of friends and sleeping bags!
Lake Gaston is where time stands still on the weekends!
